The publication serves as both an archive and a reflection on artist Lu Zhang’s public-engaged projects from 2017 to 2023. Within its pages is a collection of materials that trace the evolution of her practice, including documentation of her situationist ceramics, research notes, ephemera, reading references, visual poems, and contributions from her father in the form of drawings and calligraphy. The book-making process itself bears witness to Lu’s journey of reconciliation, exploring how her personal and artistic identity finds a place within a practice that defies easy categorization.
Lu’s projects over the years have spanned a wide spectrum of mediums and settings. Highlights include Boat Date and Sleep Date (with iterations presented at Nars Art Foundation, Macau International Art Biennale 2023 , and Creative Time HQ in New York); a series of participatory performances and collaborations during her residency at Special Special; the screening of her film, A Girl Sings Along Without Knowing the Words, held in a dim sum hall in Flushing; and, more recently, the group exhibition Home-O-Stasis at a mini-mall in Flushing. Additional ongoing projects, such as Painting Club and the Chinatown Basketball Club, further showcase Lu’s commitment to collective experiences and collaborative creation. Through these diverse and playful engagements, Lu’s practice continues to challenge conventional notions of artistic production, inviting audiences to partake in spaces of spontaneity and connection.
The publication comes in two editions, and both make the project a literal art piece in itself –
Special Limited Edition (15 + 5 A.P. copies): Presented in a handcrafted ceramic box and accompanied by a matchstick to ignite a ceramic slab, revealing the artist’s manifesto poem.
Limited Edition (450 copies): Each copy is accompanied by a hand-made ceramic piece inscribed with a hand-written character by the artist.
Lu Zhang ≈ HuaiErDeMan (Wildman) Clab features a commissioned essay and an interview with the artist by film studies scholar Xueli Wang, beautifully translated into Chinese by Anqi Gu, along with a foreword by curator and Lu’s long-time collaborator Herb Tam.
